Oplenac History
Incorporated in 1987, this non-profit cultural association set forth a goal to further enhance Serbian culture and maintain multiculturalism in Canada through folkloric dance and music. The association began with a handful of families and approximately 30 children and by 2004 boasted an enrolment of over 250 children in 8 ensembles and a recreational group of close to 100 dancers. SCA Oplenac has become a highly recognized and respected club primarily because of the high calibre of its folklore dance ensembles. We take part in many local, national and international festivals and competitions and have won numerous awards including first place at Kiwanis in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2009 and first place at the CHIN International picnic in 2001 and 2004. We have also performed at many local events such as Canada day Celebrations and have performed for dignitaries and royalty both locally and abroad. A high point for Oplenac dancers was when they received an award from the Serbian Government for being one of the best ambassadors for Serbian culture in a foreign country.
Also, a special thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for its generous grant. SCA Oplenac is a member of the Community Folk Art Council of Metropolitan Toronto, the Folk Art Council of Mississauga as well as the C.I.O.F.F. |
